The Birmingham Pen Trade Heritage Association is pleased to announce its fourth annual calligraphy competition. The purpose of this competition is to promote the art of calligraphy and to publicise the contribution of the Pen Room. Submissions are encouraged from all calligraphers, amateur and professional, who are resident in the West Midlands area. There will be an open category which anybody is welcome to enter - from beginners to those who have many years of experience. In order to acknowledge the differing standards of submissions made, judging will not only take into account the standard of lettering according to the level of experience but also the artistic interpretation of the chosen theme. However, in order to encourage those who are new to the art of calligraphy there will be a new, seperate category, The Molly Davies award, which has been set up in memory of an enthusiastic beginner in the Pen Room calligraphy group who sadly died last year.
In the open category there will be three cash prizes:
1st Prize - £125
2nd Prize - £100
3rd Prize - £75
There will only be one prize for the Molly Davies award of £50
Entrants are required to send entries on one side of paper, in any chosen style, on anything up to A3 paper in size and based upon one of the following themes:
More than one entry will be accepted.
Entrants are asked to put their name on the back of their work and also include personal details, ie name and address, telephone number, email address, on a separate piece of paper and should indicate whether they are willing to display their work in the Pen Room after entries have been judged. Entrants are also asked to state how long they have been practising calligraphy as this will be taken into consideration in the process of judging.
Entrants are advised to either hand deliver their entries or to sent them in a board-backed envelope.
Winners will be notified by the beginning of December 2008
Entrants work may be returned by collection from the Pen Room in person or by inclusion of a stamped self-addressed envelope. If the latter option is chosen, The Pen Room cannot be held responsible for work damaged or lost in the post.
All entries must be posted or delivered by hand to:
